www.colomtland.com ~~ Wolfgang and Jane Sattler | JULY 2008**** SUMMER
EDITION ****
| WOODFESTS CONTINUE --- Anyone can participate in the Trinchera Ranch Woodfest being held yearly and frequently
during the summers and fall. It is highly publicized in the local papers. The last event was July 12-13; and the next one
will be August 2-3,followed by August 23-24. They charge by the PU load depending on the size of
the PU. The location
is at the Blanca Trinchera Ranch headquarters - one mile west of Fort Garland. A small PU is only $5.
Many people are experiencing more and more difficulty with locals who are cutting live trees on isolated property. We are
discussing these Wood Rustlers on the SLVOWNERBUILDER group, but in general recommend blocking easy access with a chain, barbed
wire, or dig a trench to prevent unwanted activities on your property when you are not there. WATER DELIVERY TO FP, SDCR, and WAGON CREEK AREAS After the Forbes-Sangre de Cristo Ranches Sale, the Forbes Trinchera discontinued
water delivery in those areas. The new water delivery company is Sangre de Cristo Water Services, Inc. Their phone is 719-379-3263. BODY OF WINTER CLIMBER RECOVERED
FROM LITTLE BEAR The body of the young mountain climber who lost her
life in an avalanche in the Mt. Blanca, Little Bear area early this winter was recovered in late June by devoted family members
and rescue crews. Lygon Stevens and her brother were winter climbing when she lost her life and he was injured by managed
to get down for help. | APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE IN JULY Wolfgang
is planning on being in Costilla County to show land between July 18 and July 28th. This would be a great time to make an
appointment to see land, especially for our Alpine lots which are very viewable this time of year

be sure to stay in touch with news and features that are posted regularly now. Let Jane know if you need help hooking up with
these groups.
We also promote the SLV Owner Builder Yahoo web group which is quite active and comprised of some
great folks networking with plans, ideas, and sharing information who plan to live and/or build in the San Luis Valley area.
You can join it via a link on our LINKS page or by going to Yahoo Groups, and subscribing to slvownerbuilder THE "FORT" IS CELEBRATING
150 YEARS There have been many activities at the Fort this summer to celebrate their 150th birthday,
inlcude re-enactments, bivoucs, and parties. The people there really do a great job preserving our area's history and
we encourage all to keep up with them at their website-- plus visit when you are in the area and see their great displays
and enjoy this museum of Western History. http://www.fortgarlandmuseumfriends.com/ LOW COST PROPERTIES We

When you are ready to build or do improvements to your land, the Costilla and
Alamosa websites are great sources of information concerning permits, getting a street address, and many other subjects that
are important at that stage of the game.

Flattery might be the best form of a compliment
but--- Recently we found a party selling land on eBay 200 miles away from Costilla County with photos
that were pirated off of our site. This is disturbing, first because of the misleading photos, secondly because all our photos
are copyrighted. He/she claimed that they were just down-loaded off a site called "Photobucket.com" which I
believe. If you buy land from us, you are welcome to the photos; we even send them to you at times in printed form.
But please don't upload them to a public site without giving us credit. At some point, we need to put a logo on
all our photos but we just don't have time to go back and do all the old ones.

Notes from late fall of 2007-- Once again,
we have been reminded of importance of Mother Nature and respecting the safety of our wildlife. In Unit X
of SDCR where our home/office is located, we never thought there would be any threat of bears, but the neighbors up the road
had one on their deck one evening, possibly attracted to their barbeque grill. Later, in the same area where a group
of our neighbors share a trash receptacle, we now have to chain the lids down, as probably the same black bear had made his
presence known. Our elevation here is around 8,100 feet and we are suprised to know that the bears were down this far.
The lack of moisture affected their food sources greatly this year and in the late fall, the bears are especially hungry and
needing to stock up before their big sleep. I am told there was a mountain lion in the area as well and I am now looking
twice when I head outside at night to walk our little doggie. A very well-written article appeared in one of the
local papers suggesting that in our eagerness to feed the birds in the high-county-- we are also harming the BEARS.
The writer stated that in our area- -birds can find plenty of food during the spring, summer, and fall. They really
need food put out for them in the winter months - at least those who stick around. The bears, on the other hand, are
looking for food in the spring, summer, and fall - especially the fall -- and the scent of sunflower seeds or even the sweet
drop of hummingbird mixture that has fallen from your deck - will attract them and cause them to come back to your bird-feeders
repeatedly, and then to go looking for the source of the food-- like your home or your shed. The author said that a
Fed Bear is a Dead Bear-- because once they get the taste for the food that we inadvertently lure them towards with our kind
hearted bird feeding techniques, then eventually they may have to be re-located or put down for their bad habits, which were
human-caused. A good point to ponder.

A lock cut, another shed door open, some wood stolen off a vacant parcel.
It is an on-going problem with all the empty spaces. Some areas of the county are defiantly posting NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
signs. It is sad that a few think they are entitled to something for nothing.
One of our parcels of land had a fresh load of someone's fireplace debris dumped on it and nearby there was a
pick-up load of broken glass that had also been left there. It was at the end of a cul-de-sac -- hidden,
out of view, where cowards go do this awful stuff. The scumbags can drive around for 10 miles into the SDCR
to dump their trash, but they can't afford a dumping fee at the land-fill or the monthly cost of regular trash pickup.
It is pretty sad when you value the land and the environment with such contempt.
